We met working at a small Italian restaurant in Belltown. Gabriele was the chef. And I got a job serving just to pay the bills. I remember a conversation with the owner on my first day, where he warned me about the young Italian chef from Naples, Italy, with a “passion” aka “attitude”. I told him that, coming from an Italian-American home, it was nothing I couldn’t handle. Ironically, the young chef never said a word to me and I couldn’t figure out why. Inspired, I watched him make pasta, gnocchi, and sauces from scratch. One day I snuck to the back of the kitchen to try a bite.
